Acolytes
What we do:
Acolytes assist the congregation and clergy in offering and implementing meaningful worship services. They light and extinguish the candles at each service, act as crucifer in processions, assist the clergy in preparing for Holy Eucharist, distribute and present the offering plates, and render assistance in the chancel and sanctuary as needed during services.
Why we do what we do:
Acolytes function in a role of both service and leadership. Their attunement to the details and order of each specific liturgy and their visible participation enables the congregation to engage fully in worship. Acolytes demonstrate Jesus’ example of service by helping to establish a worship environment that is both prayerful and hospitable.
Spiritual growth:
The acolyte’s assistance with multiple tasks, responsiveness to the needs of the liturgical service, and willingness to serve shows the congregation that worship is a communal experience in which each person has gifts to offer. Spiritual growth occurs when people realize they contribute by their presence and awareness of each other in communal worship.
